HOW DOES A T1 WORK?
T1 is a digital service operating over a four (4) wire circuit. Any analog data is converted to digital pulses (1's and 0's) by a multiplexor (mux) prior to being placed on the T1 (T-Carrier) for transport. Transmission is duplex or simultaneously capable of transmitting and receiving data.
A T1 is comprised of twenty-four (24) channels, each with a capacity of 64 Kbps (64,000 bits per second) yielding an aggregate user capacity of 1.536 Mbps (1,536,000 bits per second). An additional 8 Kbps is used for synchronization and accounts for the familar 1.544 Mbps transmission rate.
A T1 may be channelized, indicating that the twenty-four (24) native DS0 (64 Kbps) channels are used. Alternatively, multiplexing equipment features may be used which combine channels. For example, a non-channelized T1 may be deployed with four (4) 384 Kbps channels or other combinations to satisfy specific customer application requirement.
