| WHAT IS ALTERNATE MARK INVERSION? |
|
T1, as a digital transport system, makes use of electrical voltages to represent ones (1's) and zeros (0's). Alternate Mark Inversion (AMI) is an encoding technique utilized by a T1 mulitplexor, reducing the amount of bandwidth and repeaters required to accurately transmit data over a given distance. When encoding ones (1's), AMI places pulses of positive 3 volts (+3 V) followed by a negative 3 volts (-3 V) on the line. The net effect of AMI is that the technique effectively yields a zero voltage on the line.
